Roithner Lasertechnik GmbH has released red 670-nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) for integration into portable medical devices. The 0.5-mW VCSELs operate at up to >50 °C, have circular beams, are compact and consume little power, requiring only a 7-mA continuous forward current and a 5-V continuous reverse voltage at 10 μA. The VCSELs come in can and dome lens can packages, as well as in round-type epoxy-molded and round-type ceramic packages. The dome lens can and round-type epoxy-molded versions offer a narrow beam angle.
