Arrayed Fiberoptics Corp. has introduced vertical fiber integration technology for the passive alignment and packaging of a variety of fiber optic components on a full-wafer scale, rather than separately. It uses a precise vertical light transmission path through the wafer and perpendicular to the wafer plane. Vertifical fiber integration components use a stack of wafers, each containing microfabricated optical elements that perform collimation, focusing, filtering, deflection and fiber optic passive alignment of a light beam as it vertically traverses the stack. The technology can be applied to high-precision and epoxy-free fiber arrays, transmitters, receivers, transceivers, variable optical attenuators, optical switches, array connectors, collimators, beam shapers and integrated filter modules.
