Mightex multiwavelength fiber-coupled light sources are enabled by the latest LED technologies and proprietary beam-combining and beam-coupling optics. Up to eight LEDs are coherently combined into a single multimode fiber. Each LED can be powered individually or simultaneously, making the WFC series a new class of light sources with a tunable spectrum.

The light sources are offered in standard and high-power configurations. Neutral beam combiners are used in the standard configuration, in which any wavelength and white color may be combined. The high-power configuration uses dichroic beamsplitters to combine different wavelengths.

LED wavelengths from 365 to 940 nm and a variety of white colors are available. The selected LEDs are factory-installed in the light source chassis. Fiber coupling is via a standard SMA port, so customers may use different fibers with the LEDs, according to application requirements. SMA-connectorized fiber patch cords are available in various core diameters and numerical apertures.

A four-channel light source includes a 5-ft electrical cable, and an eight-channel source includes two such cables. Each cable has an eight-pin locking connector on one end to be plugged into the light source, and four pairs of bare-wire terminals at the other end. Each pair of terminals is connected to a separate channel of an LED controller. Users can drive the installed LEDs individually or simultaneously using a company multichannel LED controller or other constant current sources. A cooling fan with heat sinks is built in. When two or more wavelengths are running at full power, the fan keeps the LED junctions at a low temperature to prevent damage from overheating. A separate power supply is included for driving the cooling fan.

The four-channel multiwavelength light source can be ordered with two, three and four wavelengths, and the eight-channel source can be ordered with five, six, seven and eight wavelengths. In the standard configuration, output power of each wavelength decreases with the total number of wavelengths, while in the high-power configuration the output power does not change much with the number of wavelengths.
