Kopin Corp. has announced its active-matrix LCD technology for military and industrial applications. Its 640 × 480-pixel-resolution displays operate at temperatures as low as –40 °C with near instant-on capability. They combine two proprietary patent-pending technologies: low-voltage architecture, which reduces video levels by 50%, and Vcom thin-film technology, which incorporates integrated thin-film structures in the backplane to act as a heating element. Contact of the thin film with the liquid crystal material results in ultrahigh heating efficiency and cold-start operation within seconds.
