WITec’s ParticleScout is an analytical tool for the alpha300 Raman microscope series that finds, classifies and identifies microparticles over large sample areas. It automatically detects and sorts particles down to 1 µm, acquires their Raman spectra, and generates a detailed report. Raman spectral database integration greatly reduces the time required to identify substances. ParticleScout streamlines the microparticle analysis workflow to increase the measurement rate and number of particles evaluated while maintaining all of the precision and power of Raman microscopy.

Enhanced for 2021, ParticleScout now features integration time optimization, vignetting correction, smart zoom, sample illumination options, smart separation of adjacent particles, and multiple sample area targeting. Also new is a software routine for measurements of round samples that allows a wedge section to be selected and extrapolated to represent the whole. Finally, it provides for quantitative report formatting to present data using table, bar graph histogram, and pie chart templates for ease and clarity. Research on microparticles, and especially microplastics, has come to increased prominence recently due to concerns regarding pollution.

ParticleScout can quickly characterize and quantify vast numbers of microplastics in environmental samples. It can be used in pharmaceutics to investigate powders. It can help in the formulation of new cosmetic products and to support industrial production processes and clean room maintenance, including dust particle and residue monitoring. For geoscience it can accelerate natural resource investigation, core material characterization or sediment analysis.
