Wave Optics ModuleThe Wave Optics Module is an add-on product to the COMSOL Multiphysics® simulation software platform. You can use the Wave Optics Module to efficiently model and optimize optical systems and photonic devices. Typically, simulating geometrically large wave optics problems is both time consuming and computationally demanding. The Wave Optics Module offers both a traditional full-wave propagation method and specialized beam envelope method, which requires fewer computational resources to solve optically large problems without inherent approximations. The beam envelope method is particularly well suited for simulating complex waveguides and accounting for material nonlinearities.

The Wave Optics Module includes predefined physics interfaces, automated meshing functionality, and a variety of solvers and postprocessing tools that are specialized for optical analyses. For instance, the built-in material library contains properties of more than 1400 optical materials, which streamlines model setup. Further, equation-based modeling functionality enables you to alter the materials for your specific modeling needs or create custom materials, like meta- and gyromagnetic materials.

The multiphysics capabilities of the COMSOL® software can be used to account for other physical phenomena in your wave optics simulations in order to investigate, for example, laser heating, stress-optical, and acousto-optical effects. The Wave Optics Module makes it simple to analyze optical and photonic systems such as nonlinear optics, waveguides, lasers, fiber optics, holographic data storage, metamaterials, and plasmons. After building a model of a nano- or micro-optical device, you can transform it into a simulation application. Applications can be customized to display specified inputs and outputs, which makes it easier to test and optimize your designs. Applications can also be deployed throughout your organization, giving other team members the ability to run their own analyses.
