AUBURN, Mass., Nov. 30, 2009 – PI (Physik Instrumente) L.P. has added two new multiaxis stages for superresolution microscopy applications, providing highly accurate motion with subnanometer resolution in two and three axes over travel ranges of 200 µm in XY and XYZ, with longer ranges available.

PI_NanoXY.jpgThe new PI nano1×3 series XY and XYZ nanopositioning stages are designed for inverted microscopes from Leica, Nikon, Olympus and Zeiss. The low profile design of 20 mm facilitates integration. The large aperture accommodates microscopy accessories such as slide holders and petri dish holders. The optional M-545 XY 25 × 25-mm positioning stage serves as a stable basis for the piezo stage and is available in different versions for the above named companies.

Features include a 24-bit controller with USB, Ethernet and RS-232 interfaces and analog control, closed-loop control for subnanometer precision, and a longer lifetime due to ceramic encapsulated piezo drives. The stage is cost-effective due to its low-cost piezoresistive sensors.

Options include a manual XY stage with a motor upgrade. There is software support for leading image acquisition packages.

A newly designed piezo controller is included and comes with three 24-bit digital interfaces (USB, TCP/IP, RS-232) and a wide-band analog interface for compatibility with all control signals. With its 24-bit digital-to-analog converters, commanded resolution is improved by two orders of magnitude over the still widely used 16-bit converters. The controller is also compatible with all major image acquisition packages and comes with a wide variety of software drivers and programming examples.

For highly stable closed-loop operation, piezoresistive sensors are applied directly to the moving structure of the stage and precisely measure the displacement of the platform. Their high sensitivity provides optimum position stability and responsiveness. The proprietary servo circuit improves the motion linearity compared to conventional piezoresistive sensor controllers.

All parts are black anodized for minimum reflection. The proprietary PICMA technology ensures long lifetime.

Applications include single-molecule microscopy, 3-D imaging, autofocusing, scanning and alignment tasks in bionanotechnology, superresolution microscopy; deconvolution microscopy and biotechnology.
