Double-Clad Ytterbium Fiber
for the Fiber Laser Market
SALEM, N.H., Sept. 9 -- StockerYale Inc., a provider of photonics-based products, today announced the availability of the first in a series of ytterbium (Yb) doped fiber products. The fiber is a central component in Yb fiber lasers, which the company says are gradually replacing conventional Nd:YAG lasers in applications such as laser marking, material processing, welding, surgery and free-space communications.
"StockerYale is positioned to supply Yb fibers to fiber laser suppliers such as JDS Uniphase and other companies, who are leading this emerging market. This includes different variations of double clad rare earth doped fiber, grating fiber, combiner fiber and single mode output fiber," stated Paul Jortberg, senior vice president of StockerYale's Optical Components Group. "According to a Laser Focus World study, in 2004 fiber lasers accounted for approximately 5 percent of the $2 billion industrial laser market. By 2007 that share is expected to increase to 19 percent of an estimated $2.3 billion market," observed Jortberg.
Rick Tumminelli, StockerYale's manager of specialty fiber operations, explained: "Unlike solution doping, StockerYale's rare earth doping process provides for high quantum efficiency and high rare earth concentration due to more uniform homogenization of rare earth into the glass matrix. In addition, the process results in superior uniformity over the preform length, yielding uniform absorption over long fiber lengths. This provides for efficiency in the fiber laser manufacturing process."
