CAMBRIDGE, England, March 31, 2011 — Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. has announced the enhanced iCAP 6200 inductively coupled optical emission spectrometer, which now incorporates a wider wavelength range of 175 to 847 nm, enabling users to measure a broader range of analytes during multielement analyses and to access more sensitive wavelengths for improved analyte detection capability.

The simultaneous dual-view instrument provides an alternative to flame atomic absorption. It is used in laboratories that perform routine analyses of up to 100 samples per day. With its enhanced specifications, it can now measure sulfur as part of a multielement method in addition to the most sensitive mercury, thallium, carbon, tin, phosphorus, arsenic and iodine wavelengths. Enhanced analytical performance is combined with design features that reduce running costs and simplify operation, making the spectrometer a good choice for first-time users of the technique.

Applications include food and consumer safety, and environmental, mining and WEEE/RoHS testing. The trace elemental analysis instrument features an optimized gas distribution system to minimize gas consumption and reduce running costs. The torch design reduces plasma gas consumption, and an optimized plasma interface gas flow consumes only one liter per minute.

The compact device requires minimal bench space and delivers good signal stability, sensitive analyte detection and a wide dynamic range. It includes a range of preloaded method templates developed to enable protocol-compliant sample analysis and unlimited access to a new dynamic method library, hosted online at The templates complement the preoptimized sample introduction specifications, enabling simple, consistent operation and powerful analytical performance for users at any level.
