GENEVA, June 16, 2006 -- id Quantique, a manufacturer of visible and infrared spectrum photon counters and short-pulse laser sources primarily for network security and optical instrumentation, has introduced its latest product to meet the needs of researchers: the id300 short-pulse laser source.

id300laser.jpgThe id Quantique id300 has been designed to meet the specific requirements of researchers who need to generate short laser pulses at wavelengths of 780 nm, 850 nm, 1310 nm or 1550 nm and is ideally suited to work in combination with id Quantique's single-photon detection and counting modules id200 at telecom wavelengths, the company said. The laser source was unveiled this month at Optatek in Frankfurt, Germany.

The laser source for 850 nm is based on a VCSEL (vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser) or on a Fabry-Perot laser diode (for 780 nm, 1310 nm or 1550 nm), and is triggered externally via a trigger input to produce sub-nanosecond laser pulses with a repetition rate ranging from DC to 500 MHz.

In addition to the various wavelengths, the id300 is also available with different trigger input signals. It has a pulse duration of 300 ps, a peak power of 1 mW and a spectral width (full width half maximum) of typically 7 nm. As an option, the id300 is available with a polarization-maintaining fiber.

Introduced in 2002, the id200 was the first single-photon detector on the market, the company said. The id200 is based on a InGaAs diode and has a quantum efficiency of up to 10 percent with a very low dark count rate. The wavelength range is 900 to 1700 nm. The id200 is a complete system with internal counter, clock output, adjustable gate duration, adjustable dead time and adjustable delay, making it ideally suited to work with the id300-1310 and id300-1550 short-pulse laser source, the company said.
