AUBURN, N.Y., May 17, 2011 — The success of an image processing application depends largely upon the quality of the lighting system. Important factors are a high luminous flux and good homogeneity. To meet these requirements, Volpi USA is introducing the intraLED 3 LED light source. This economical and compact lighting system has a service life of 50,000 h and a light intensity of >500 lm, measured on a 1-m lightguide with an active diameter of 13.5 mm.

The light source is intended for use in machine vision and industrial microscopy applications. With light homogeneity of ±5% and a typical color temperature of 6000 K, intensity adjustment is done either manually via the integrated RS-232 interface (optional USB) or via the multiport with digital and analog input. The intraLED 3 is available in two variations and is compatible with lightguides from Volpi and Schott-Fostec.

Most applications with 100- or 150-W halogen light sources can now be implemented with an intraLED 3. Replacement of conventional halogen light sources offers the user numerous advantages: the long service life, the maintenance-free design and the lower power consumption of 24 VDC/maximum 55 W. The compact enclosure allows use on a small surface, and the threaded rails (M4) on four sides facilitate systems integration. Due to its low heat emission, in critical applications the ambient temperature no longer has to be cooled as much as previously, reducing the company’s CO2 footprint.

Compared to pure LED lighting components such as long LED line illuminations, the hybrid approach with LED light sources and homogeneous fiber optic line illuminations offers cost advantages and flexibility. With meters-long LED line illuminations, the entire system has to be dismantled if individual LED modules fail. Hybrid systems allow quick replacement of individual light sources, reducing downtime caused by maintenance work. With easy-to-replace glass fiber components, the lighting situation can be flexibly switched between bright-field, dark-field and transmitted light.
