AUBURN, Mass., Sept. 2, 2013 — The miCos LPS-45 linear translation stage from PI (Physik Instrumente) positions samples along a precisely guided path with distances up to 1 in. for applications in air, vacuum and nonmagnetic environments.

An optical linear encoder measures the position of the moving platform with nanometer resolution, while the platform is controlled in closed-loop operation by a compact electronic motion controller.

The device has a 15-mm profile with a standard travel range of 13 and 26 mm. A quiet-running piezo inertia drive provides holding forces of 10 N, with maximum holding force available when at rest; this locks down the platform for better long-term stability. There is also no drive current required and thus no heat generation.
