NEWARK, N.J. — New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Center for Solar Terrestrial Research’s Big Bear Solar Observatory will be the permanent home for the National Science Foundation’s Synoptic Optical Long-Term Investigations of the Sun (SOLIS) telescope. The telescope will be used for long-term and consistent monitoring of the “sun as a whole globe” over the full 11-year solar...]]>

NJIT Designers Fabricate Masks and Shields to Combat COVID-19
As medical supplies dwindle in the face of increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases, members of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) community are designing and fabricating devices using lasers to bolster supply.

After consulting with emergency room physicians on specifications, a team in the Makerspace at NJIT designed and manufactured a prototype of a face shield that can be used by various emergency workers. The front of the mask is a long piece of clear polycarbonate plastic, while the frame is made from HDPE plastic — the same material used in plastic milk bottles, which pathogens have difficulty clinging to. The shield covers most of the face and is held in place by a simple strap.

“Our goal was to build...]]>

NJIT Team Wins Augmented World Expo Europe Awards
A team of engineers, game designers, artists, and clinicians led by the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has won two international awards for its vision therapy program at the 2018 Augmented World Expo Europe conference for augmented reality technology.

The NJIT project, VERVE (Virtual Eye Rotation Vision Exercises), employs virtual reality games to correct an eye motor disorder called convergence insufficiency, in which the muscles that control eye movements do not coordinate to focus on near objects. The NJIT-led team of engineers, game designers, artists, and clinicians won two major international awards for the vision therapy platform, including “most innovative breakthrough,” at the 2018 Augmented World Expo...]]>

The New Jersey Institute of Technology Opens Rapid Prototyping Facility
The New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has opened Makerspace, a training-focused, rapid prototyping manufacturing facility.

Partners from government and industry joined the NJIT community to celebrate the opening of Makerspace at NJIT, a training-focused, rapid prototyping facility that is central to both the university's hands-on learning mission and its growing relationship with New Jersey's manufacturing community. NJIT’s Cell Podium Develops Augmented Reality Hazard Training
Cell Podium is a joint venture between Professor Cesar Bandera and physicist Peter Schmitt. The system was developed in collaboration with Mitchel Rosen, director of the Office of Public Health Practice (OPHP) at the Rutgers School of Public Health for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).

NIEHS sought to provide responders with training exercises that combine actual protective equipment and tools with simulated hazards that look and behave like...]]>

Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics Device Offers Widest Real-Time Views of the Sun
A groundbreaking new optical device has been developed to correct images of the sun previously distorted by multiple layers of atmospheric turbulence.

Recent images taken from Big Bear Solar Observatory of a massive section of the Sun’s surface — about 23,000 square miles — showcase the advances in real-time clarity over vast distances presented. Courtesy of Big Bear Solar Observatory.
The device developed at the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s (NJIT) Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) is providing scientists with the most precisely detailed, real-time pictures to date of solar activity occurring across vast stretches of the star's surface.

Philip Goode, research professor of physics at NJIT and...]]>
