PicoQuant Student Berlage Wins Physics Prize for Work on Photon Antibunching Effect
Caroline Berlage, a former student at PicoQuant, is one of this year’s winners of the prestigious Physik-Studienpreis awarded by the Physikalische Gesellschaft zu Berlin.

Berlage studied physics at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and carried out the experimental work for her master's thesis from 2016 to 2019 at PicoQuant as well as the laboratory of professor Oliver Benson.

Rainer Erdmann, the company’s managing director, said Berlage used a promising new technique to count molecules based on the photon antibunching effect. A central aspect of her work was to systematically investigate this method for imaging artificial as well as biological samples under a wide range of experimental conditions.

Lighting Up Microscopes: Advances and Emerging Sources
Microscope developers are a resourceful bunch, opting to use the light source available to them at the time to peer at or below the surface of various materials. Even dating back to the 17th century, Galileo used sunlight to produce the very first optical microscope.

The next illumination sources to become available were lamps such as tungsten (incandescent), xenon, mercury and metal halide vapor. While such lamps can still be found in laboratories today, it was when an entirely new way of generating photons was discovered that the field of microscopy changed forever.

The year 1960 brought with it the invention of the laser. From then until today, researchers have been exploiting every variation of the laser and...]]>

A New Benchmark in Photon Counting
Laser Components formed a strategic partnership with PicoQuant GmbH to produce photon counting modules with the highest quantum efficiency and record-breaking dark count rates, said the company.

The new Count photon counting modules achieve an unrivaled quantum efficiency of over 70 percent in the red region. Another advantage of these photon counters over modules currently available on the market is their significantly higher quantum efficiency in the blue spectral range.

The Count series is based on a silicon Geiger-mode APD developed specifically for this series. It is one of the lowest-noise APDs on the market. Together with electronics that has been optimized down to the smallest detail, this APD represents the heart of...]]>

The art of microspectroscopy
“Microspectroscopy is basically the ability to obtain spectra of microscopic samples or sampling areas. It differs from other microscopy techniques in that it is primarily used to acquire spectra rather than images,” according to Paul Martin, president of Craic Technologies Inc. Based in San Dimas, Calif., the company specializes in microscopy and microspectroscopy in the UV-VIS-NIR regions.

Martin noted that both spectra and high-resolution digital images can be acquired with the company’s microspectrophotometers, also known as microspectrometers (including its QDI 2010 model), which are designed to measure the UV-VIS-NIR spectra of microscopic samples or microscopic areas of larger objects. Of the two types of...]]>

Photonics West YIA Winners
SPIE has announced the winners of the Young Investigator Award (YIA) from Photonics West 2009 in San Diego, Calif.
As part of this year’s Photonics West, SPIE organized a special symposium called the “Single Molecule Spectroscopy and Imaging” conference, where they announced the winners. The conference touched on biomedical spectroscopy, microscopy and imaging, and was attended by roughly 150 scientists who enjoyed more than 40 presentations.
The specially dedicated YIA, which is worth $750, was sponsored by PicoQuant to motivate young students to submit and present their work at North America’s largest trade show of its kind.
