Space telescope spots three super Earths
Three super-Earth-sized planets in two newly discovered planetary systems are in a “habitable zone” – a distance from their stars suitable for supporting liquid water – and could potentially support life as we know it, according to NASA’s Kepler mission.

“The discovery of these rocky planets in the habitable zone brings us a bit closer to finding a place like home,” said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator of the Science Mission Directorate at NASA headquarters in Washington. “It is only a matter of time before we know if the galaxy is home to a multitude of planets like Earth, or if we are a rarity.”

The Kepler space telescope, which simultaneously and continuously...]]>

OSA Kicks Off ‘Enabled by Optics’ Campaign
A campaign to raise the general public’s awareness of the importance of optics and photonics has been announced by The Optical Society (OSA).

Called “Enabled by Optics” and launched by OSA’s Corporate Associates program, the campaign will emphasize the extraordinary role optics has played in furthering innovation and having a critical impact on everyday life. The first phase of the launch includes a contest that will promote optics as an enabling technology by featuring its lesser-known role in products widely used by the general public.

The contest will include two submission tracks — one for companies and another for both college and graduate-level students. Optics and photonics companies can...]]>

Multijunction Solar Cell Design Could Exceed 50% Efficiency
A lattice-matched, triple-junction solar cell proposed by an international team of scientists has the potential to break the 50 percent conversion efficiency mark, a goal in multijunction photovoltaic development.

Produced by scientists in the Electronics Technology and Science Div. of the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), in collaboration with researchers at Imperial College London and MicroLink Devices Inc. of Niles, Ill., the solar cell could achieve this efficiency with novel semiconductor materials and with band structure engineering via strain-balanced quantum walls.

Multijunction solar cells are those in which each junction is tuned to different solar spectrum wavelength bands to enhance efficiency. High bandgap...]]>

Report Hails Photonics as Hope for US Economy
A national photonics initiative would not only advance the economy in the US but also enable growth in applications of optical science and technology, according to a report from the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Committee on Harnessing Light.

The report identifies research priorities and grand challenges to fill gaps in optics and photonics; it recommends that the federal government develop such an initiative to foster collaboration between academia, industry and government, and to steer federal R&D funding and activities.

“Much is unknown when pursuing basic optical science and its transition to engineering and ultimately to products, but the rewards can be great,” said Alan Willner, professor of...]]>
