Time Delay Integration Speeds Up Imaging

Xing-Fei He and Nixon O, Teledyne Dalsa Inc.

Using a sensor architecture that permits photoelectrons generated from multiple exposures to be summed with no additive noise enables high-speed imaging under light-starved conditions. This technology has become a standard in the automated inspection of flat panel displays and is expanding to markets such as photovoltaic panel inspection. Time delay integration (TDI) imaging technology enables high-speed in-line automatic optical inspection (AOI) of high-performance displays such as those used in iPhones, iPads and high-definition televisions. The $130 billion flat panel display...Read full article

    Glossary
    automatic optical inspection
A system for automatic industrial process control or measurement, consisting of an optical module for image acquisition, a segmentation processor to isolate the image from its background, and an image analysis processor.
    responsivity
The gain that occurs between light intensity incident on a CCD given by the photocurrent produced.
    time delay integration
A method of scanning in which a frame transfer device produces a continuous video image of a moving object by means of a stack of linear arrays aligned with and synchronized to the movement of the object to be imaged in such a way that, as the image moves from one line to the next, the stored charge moves along with it, providing higher resolution at lower light levels than is possible with a line-scan camera.
