Chip-Based 3D Printer for Prototyping on the Go
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., June 10, 2024 — Teams at MIT and the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) have fabricated a proof-of-concept chip-based 3D printer. The device, which fits onto a U.S. quarter, consists of a single millimeter-scale photonic chip that emits reconfigurable beams of light into a well of resin that cures into a solid shape when light strikes it. The prototype eschews moving parts in favor of an array of tiny optical antennas to steer a beam of light into the rapid-cure resin, combining silicon photonics
Transient Absorption Helps Distinguish Excitation Values
WÜRZBURG, Germany, March 28, 2023 — Since the 1970s, researchers have struggled with the same problem: Shining a laser on a sample can excite it not just once, but several times per experiment. As a result, measurement results of the single excitation and the multiple excitations...
Lensless Neural Network Opens Up Machine Vision Possibilities
BEIJING, May 30, 2022 — Researchers led by Hongwei Chen of the Beijing National Research Center for Information Science and Technology and Tsinghua University have developed a lensless optoelectronic neural network architecture for computer vision tasks. The system uses a...
Photonics Community Pledges Support for Those Affected by War in Ukraine
Apr 4, 2022 — The scientific community, and the optics and photonics community within it, continues its support of those affected by the war in Ukraine. Initiatives by leading organizations, as well as top trade shows and scientific journals, are among those...
Imaging Method Gauges Quality of 3D-Printed Metal
SINGAPORE, March 3, 2022 — Researchers at Nanyang Technological University developed a fast, low-cost imaging method that can analyze the structure of 3D-printed metal parts to assess the quality of the material. The system uses an optical camera, a light source, and a...
Lasers Alter Material Properties Without Producing Excess Heat
PASADENA, Calif., Dec. 13, 2021 — Researchers at Caltech have reported success using lasers to dramatically sculpt the properties of materials without the production of excess heat, which can damage the materials. “These tools could let you transform the electronic properties...
Team Develops Largest-of-Its-Kind Quantum Simulator
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., July 14, 2021 — A team of physicists from the Harvard-MIT Center for Ultracold Atoms and other universities has developed a special type of quantum computer known as a programmable quantum simulator capable of operating with 256 quantum bits, or...
Laser Cools Antimatter to Near Absolute Zero
VANCOUVER, British Columbia, April 1, 2021 — A custom-built laser has cooled antimatter to near absolute zero. The work, carried out by researchers with the CERN-based ALPHA collaboration, holds significant implications for the study of antimatter and its properties, and of foundational...
Optical Fiber Brings Universal Quantum Computing Closer
GAITHERSBURG, Md., March 25, 2021 — Physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) measured and controlled a superconducting qubit using optical fiber, rather than metal electrical wires. The work moves toward a universal quantum computer capable of solving...
AI Aids in Real-Time Generation of 3D Holograms
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., March 12, 2021 — A method for generating holograms uses an artificial intelligence program that a consumer-grade laptop is capable of running, giving implications in VR and 3D printing. A team at MIT introduced the method, which generates holograms almost instantly....
Chip-based Frequency Comb Sharpens Neural Networks
MÜNSTER, Germany, Jan. 11, 2021 — Through an international collaboration, researchers from the University of Münster have developed photonic processors that combine processing and data storage on a single chip. Led by Wolfram Pernice, a professor at the Institute of Physics and...
D-Wave Systems Publishes Quantum Computer Study
BURNABY, British Columbia, Sept. 24, 2018 — Quantum computing systems developer D-Wave Systems Inc. has published a study demonstrating a topological phase transition using its 2048-qubit annealing quantum computer. This complex quantum simulation of materials is a major step toward reducing...
‘Metamirror’ Doubles Incident Light Frequency
AUSTIN, Texas, July 8, 2014 — A nanostructure produces nonlinear effects a million times greater than traditional, macro-scale nonlinear crystals, according to a team of researchers from Texas and Germany. This “metamirror” could enable miniaturized laser systems and...
BSI, ICFO Technologies Study Photosynthesis
EAST LANSING, Mich., and BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 21, 2014 — Studying photosynthesis at the single-molecule level could lay the groundwork for better understanding of quantum physics’ role in nature. Researchers from the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) in Barcelona are using their advanced laser...
Irreproducible research spurs reassessment of editorial guidelines
Jul 8, 2013 — Publish or perish, they say. But what if the pressure to do so is undermining the scientific process? C. Glenn Begley, senior vice-president at TetraLogic Pharmaceuticals in Malvern, Pa., is acutely aware of this possibility. Whenever he asks...
Glasses-free 3-D could be coming to a mobile display near you
PALO ALTO, Calif. – While developing optical interconnect technology, engineers at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories realized what they had created could be much more: a multiangle, glasses-free 3-D display technology for mobile devices. Dr. David Fattal is a member of...
LED Production Goes Bigger, Gets Better
Jun 1, 2013 — LED makers strengthen the appeal of their products by adopting a semiconductor-industry-type approach to yield management, defect control and dedicated manufacturing equipment. Compared with semiconductor fabrication, LED production is still in...
Glasses-Free 3-D Display Well Suited for Mobile Devices
PALO ALTO, Calif., March 27, 2013 — A new glasses-free 3-D display based on diffractive optics modulates at video rates and shows images that can be viewed from multiple angles even when the display is tilted, making it well suited for mobile devices.
Laser mixing generates multifrequency light
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – A groundbreaking laser mixing technique can manipulate electron-hole collisions to create many frequencies of light simultaneously. This mechanism for ultrafast light modulation has potential applications in high-speed optical communications. ...
Laser Mixing Generates Multifrequency Light
SANTA BARBARA, Calif., March 29, 2012 — A groundbreaking laser mixing technique can manipulate electron-hole collisions to create many frequencies of light simultaneously. This mechanism for ultrafast light modulation has potential applications in high-speed optical communications.
Masking moments in time by splitting light
ITHACA, N.Y. – A technique that employs a split-time lens to break light into its slower (red) and faster (blue) components creates a temporal gap, albeit at the picosecond timescale, engineers at Cornell University have reported. The optical fiber-based...
Time Bandits: Temporal Cloaking Hides Events
ITHACA, N.Y., Jan. 11, 2012 — A new "time cloak" technique is a step toward the development of spatio-temporal cloaking, say engineers at Cornell University. The optical-fiber based system uses a split-time lens to break light into its slower and faster components, creating a...
QD ‘Blinking’ Mystery Unravels
LOS ALAMOS, N.M., Nov. 21, 2011 — A significantly better understanding of why quantum dots blink, and how this blinking can be controlled and even completely suppressed, should lead to many sought-after applications, such as single-particle tracking, novel LEDs and single-photon...
Let There Be Light...In a Vacuum
GOTHENBURG, Sweden, Nov. 17, 2011 — The quantum mechanical principle which states that a vacuum is not empty space, but instead teeming with particles that flit in and out of existence, has been observed for the first time as photons were coaxed to leave this virtual state and...
