Stony Brook University News
AI-Aided Spectroscopy Assesses Burn Severity to Improve Recoveries
WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 17, 2023 — Researchers at Stony Brook University developed a neural network model that uses terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) to evaluate burns and predict healing outcomes. The latest work builds on a previous advancement in which the researchers developed a portable, hand-held imaging device for fast THz-TDS imaging of burn injuries, which aims to make the method practical for clinical use. Physical changes caused by a burn will produce alterations in the THz reflectivity. For this
Ursula Keller Awarded Marcel Benoist Prize: People in the News: 09/14/22
ZÜRICH, Sept. 14, 2022 — Ursula Keller was named as the recipient of the Swiss Science Prize Marcel Benoist for her work in ultrafast lasers. The prize is often referred to as the “Swiss Nobel prize” and is granted to a scientist of Swiss nationality or...
Army Research Lab, Stony Brook Develop Nighttime Imaging Material
ADELPHI, Md., Feb. 16, 2018 — The U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) and New York’s Stony Brook University have developed a new synthesis process for low-cost fabrication of a material previously discounted in literature for high-sensitivity IR cameras, opening new...
Infrared Links Could Replace Wires in Data Centers
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., Feb. 6, 2017 — A Team of engineers are proposing to eliminate most of the wires in data centers and instead use infrared free-space optics for communications. The Free-space optical Inter-Rack nEtwork with high FLexibilitY — Firefly — architecture is a...
Doppler OCT Measures Cocaine’s Impact on Brain
WASHINGTON, Aug. 28, 2014 — A variant of optical coherence tomography has provided the first images of blood flow disruption in the brain caused by cocaine use.
Kao Named SLAC Director
MENLO PARK, Calif., Oct. 25, 2012 — After a nearly 10-month search for a new director at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Stanford University decided to promote from within, naming Associate Director Chi-Chang Kao to the position Wednesday.
Supercarbon: “Denser than diamond”
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Three newly discovered carbon structures may be at least three percent denser, more brilliant and better able to handle pressure than diamond can. Newly discovered modifications of carbon, such as graphene, have resulted in a scientific and...
Biological Pacemaker Triggered by Light
STONY BROOK, N.Y., Aug. 18, 2011 — A new method of stimulating heart muscle cells could lead to the creation of pacemakers that are remotely controlled with low-energy light. Employing optogenetics, researchers at Stony Brook University introduced light-sensitive proteins into cells,...
Nanotubes Cover Ultradark Detector
GAITHERSBURG, Md., Aug. 19, 2010 — Harnessing darkness for practical use, researchers at NIST have developed a laser power detector coated with the world’s darkest material — a forest of carbon nanotubes that reflects almost no light across the visible and part of the...
Nature’s ’Light Switch’ Decoded
UPTON, N.Y., June 2, 2010 — Scientists at the US Department of Energy’s (DoE) Brookhaven National Laboratory and collaborators at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, have deciphered the structure of a molecular ‘switch’ much like the one plants use to sense...
Lensless Imaging of Whole Cells
BERKELEY, Calif. May 7, 2010 — Scientists working at beamline 9.0.1 of the Advanced Light Source (ALS) at the US Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have used x-ray diffraction microscopy to make images of whole yeast cells, achieving the highest...
Asylum’s Band Excitation Technique Grants Awarded
SANTA BARBARA, Calif., March 29, 2010 — Asylum Research, manufacturer of scanning probe and atomic force (SPM/AFM) microscopes, has announced eight new grants for early adopters to explore the capabilities and applications of a new band excitation (BE) technique. The R&D100...
Fluorosensor Reveals Seafloor Habitats
Jan 1, 2006 — Robert C. Aller likes to muck about when he works. He studies worms, clams and other animals that live in aquatic sediments. These creatures create complex, three-dimensional chemical microenvironmental and transport path networks that Aller, a...
