Laser Technology Mobilizes Head Trauma Assessment
BIRMINGHAM, England, Dec. 14, 2023 — The decisions made about patient care in the hour following a traumatic brain injury (TBI) are critical to patient outcome. A hand-held diagnostic device to assess the severity of the injury immediately, at the point of care, could make the difference between a successful outcome or irreversible brain damage following a TBI. To enable timely intervention, researchers at the University of Birmingham are developing a portable noninvasive diagnostic to quickly measure the extent of cerebral
European Initiative to Establish Standards for Diffuse Optics
BIRMINGHAM, England, June 20, 2022 — A collaboration between 12 European institutions aims to deliver performance assessment and standardization (PAS) in the field of diffuse optics (DO). DO analyzes how light is absorbed and scattered by biological tissues, using low-power...
Researchers Report Field Success with Quantum Gravity Gradiometer
BIRMINGHAM, England, March 7, 2022 — Researchers from the UK National Quantum Technology Hub in Sensors and Timing at the University of Birmingham used quantum technology to detect an object hidden below the ground. They said this is the first time a quantum gravity gradiometer has...
SPIE Funding Backs UK Optics and Photonics Education Initiatives
BELLINGHAM, Wash., Oct. 4, 2021 — SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, will provide support through its Endowment Matching Program to two initiatives at universities in the U.K. The program has provided $500,000 to the University of Glasgow to support a...
3D Printed Metals Shown to Be Both Strong and Ductile
BIRMINGHAM, England, June 13, 2018 — Most mechanisms used for strengthening crystalline materials lead to the reduction of ductility. Selective laser melting produces a stainless steel with both significantly enhanced strength and ductility. A joint research team from the University of...
Robotics Research Focuses on Machine Vision
SWINDON, England, March 13, 2017 — The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the UK's main agency for funding research in engineering and the physical sciences, has established two program grants worth a total of £10.8 million ($11.5 million) to support...
Observing the World Through an Animal’s Eyes
Sep 14, 2015 — Knowing how animals see the world is helping scientists better understand the environment and the ways animals live and survive. A new camera technology, developed at the University of Exeter in England, now allows humans to view the world through...
Gooch & Housego Wins £364K to Develop 'Freeze Ray'
TORQUAY, England, July 30, 2015 — Gooch & Housego PLC has been awarded £364,000 (about $569,000) in U.K. funding to lead development of a miniature, high-power fiber system for laser cooling in practical environments. The Freeze-Ray project also involves e2v Technologies...
UK Establishes 4 Quantum Technology Hubs
BIRMINGHAM, England, Dec. 2, 2014 — Four newly established quantum technology research hubs in the U.K. will explore advanced light detectors and more. The £120 million project involves 17 universities and 132 companies and is funded by the British Engineering and Physical...
Laser Trap Studies Asthma Drug’s Journey from Inhaler to Lung
CAMBRIDGE, England, Nov. 13, 2014 — More efficient asthma treatments could be possible thanks to a laser “trap” that examines how drug particles expelled from inhalers behave as they enter the respiratory tract.
Device Creates Multiple ‘Ghosts’
SINGAPORE, Feb. 19, 2013 — An optical device that uses metamaterials and optical scattering to “engineer” multiple ghosts — the holy grail of the fields of optical illusions, electromagnetics and radar detection — offers new possibilities for cognitive deception through the...
True Invisibility Remains Elusive
Aug 1, 2012 — But research moves toward practical applications of cloaking technology. Invisibility cloaks have long captured our imaginations, whether actual cloaks imbued with magical powers – see the Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter series –...
Transformation Optics Bends all the Rules
Aug 1, 2011 — From invisibility cloaks to hyperlenses, and photovoltaic concentrators to superresolution microscopy, transformation optics makes big promises. In the same way that water flows can be manipulated using dams and channels, light can be made to...
“Carpet cloak” hides more than its size implies
LYNGBY, Denmark – Optical cloaking is getting a boost from metamaterials in a new technology called “carpet cloaking,” which can conceal a much larger area than other cloaking techniques of comparable size. The new carpet cloak, based on an...
‘Carpet Cloak’ Hides More Than its Size Implies
LYNGBY, Denmark, May 3, 2011 — Optical cloaking, the ability to conceal small objects by bending and channeling light around them, is getting a boost from metamaterials in a new technology called “carpet cloaking,” which can conceal a much larger area than other...
