Enlightra, DESY Hamburg Develop Improved, Scalable Comb Lasers
RENENS, Switzerland, Jan. 25, 2024 — Laser technology startup Enlightra has collaborated with DESY Hamburg to develop comb lasers that are more stable and efficient by design. The work demonstrated microresonators with programmable synthetic reflection providing tailored injection feedback to the driving laser. The technology is a marked improvement over conventional self-injection locking, and can be produced using standard lithographic production. Comb lasers are sources of multiple colors with equidistant spacing ranging

Moth Eyes Inspire Antireflective Coating
TOKYO, Nov. 6, 2020 — Researchers at Tokyo University of Science have developed an antireflective coating inspired by the biostructures in moth eyes. Previous attempts at re-creating the antireflective structure, developed through years of evolution, yielded varying...
Nanostructure Allows Large Incidence Angles in Fiber Optics
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, Nov. 2, 2020 — Researchers from ITMO, in collaboration with the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology and Australian National University, have resolved the fundamental problem of light coupling into optical fiber at incidence angles of over 70°. The...
Using Machine Learning to Selectively Optimize Photonic Nanostructures
BERLIN, Germany, Oct. 1, 2018 — Using machine learning and computer simulations, the Nano-SIPPE team at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HBZ) has identified the most important patterns of field distribution in a photonic nanostructure. The numerical method used by the researchers...
Bowtie Photonic Crystal Allows Extreme Light Concentration with Low Loss
NASHVILLE, Tenn., Aug. 27, 2018 — A new nanostructure that is part bowtie and part funnel has been shown to focus and conduct light powerfully and nearly indefinitely, as measured by a scanning near-field optical microscope. The bow-tie photonic structure, developed by a team at...
Plasmonic Patch Boosts Fluorescence for Biosensing, Bioimaging
ST. LOUIS, Mo., July 12, 2018 — To strengthen weak signals in fluorescence-based detection and imaging techniques, researchers have developed an inexpensive plasmonic patch that can increase fluorescence intensity up to 100×. The patch, about a centimeter square, is based on...
Stealth Sheet Conceals Hot Objects from IR
MADISON, Wis., June 27, 2018 — An ultrathin cloaking material has been developed that can hide hot objects, such as human bodies and military vehicles, from IR cameras. The new “stealth sheet” is <1 m thick and absorbs approximately 94 percent of the IR light it...
Superresolution Microscopy Enhances DNA Nanostructures
MUNICH, Germany, June 26, 2018 — A method of superresolution microscopy, called DNA-PAINT, allows all of the strands within DNA-based nanostructures to be visualized individually, with a high degree of spatial resolution. Using DNA-PAINT, researchers can directly visualize all...
Carbon Nanotubes Emerge as Potential Quantum Light Sources
LOS ALAMOS, N.M., June 25, 2018 — Researchers report on the potential of carbon nanotubes as single-photon emitters for quantum information processing. A team at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is collaborating with colleagues at CNRS (The French National Center for Scientific...
Squeezed Light Confined to Space of One Atom in Nanophotonics Advance
BARCELONA, Spain, April 25, 2018 — Using graphene, researchers have found a way to confine light down to a space that is one atom thick. The ability to confine light to such a small space could pave the way for ultrasmall optoelectronic devices. Previous work has shown that while...
UV Light Exposure Causes Composite Material to Grow Stronger On Demand
ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md., April 24, 2018 — A technique has been developed that causes a composite material to become stiffer and stronger when exposed to UV light. The technique can be controlled, allowing the strength of the material to be adapted to the requirements of the application. To...
