New Class of Visible-Light Photoswitches Could Provide Greater Molecular Photocontrol
GRONINGEN, Netherlands, June 5, 2019 — A consortium of scientists from five European institutions has developed a new class of molecular photoswitches that are operated with visible light only. The new switches show large separation of absorption bands and function in various solvents including water. The researchers believe they could lead to the development of improved photocontrolled systems for a variety of applications that require fast responsive functions. The new class of photoswitches combines the photochromic dyes
Multidisciplinary Initiative Investigates Light as an Energy Source
SANTA BARBARA, Calif., May 21, 2018 — An interdisciplinary group of scientists is embarking on a five-year project to explore the use of photoswitches to develop a next generation of devices that operate mechanically upon exposure to light. The goal of the $7.5M project, called the...
Photoswitch Chemistry Creates 3D Shapes From Light
DALLAS, July 17, 2017 — A novel technology uses a special class of photoactivatable molecules and digital light processing (DLP) to construct light shapes into animated structures that have volume and are viewable from 360 degrees. The technology is not a hologram, and...
Photoswitch Affects Nerve Cells in Eye, Brain
CHICAGO, Nov. 16, 2012 — Light-sensitive molecules that stimulate a neural response in the cells of the retina and brain could be the first step toward overcoming degenerative eye diseases or quieting epileptic seizures.
Photoswitches Eyed for Sight Restoration
BERKELEY, Calif., Nov. 3, 2006 -- Light-sensitive optical switches that could be placed into a retina and turned on and off easily are being eyed as a way to restore sight by making blind nerve cells "see." A major goal of the UC Berkeley-LBNL Nanomedicine Development Center, a...
