Mathematical Approach Deciphers Orbital Angular Momentum Information
GUANGZHOU, China, Aug. 14, 2023 — Researchers from Sun Yat-sen University and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) have made progress in the use of interferometry to decipher orbital angular momentum (OAM) spectrum information. Lightwaves with OAM have become important in technologies including communication, imaging, and quantum information processing. For these to be effective, it’s crucial to know the exact structure of these helical light beams. So far, this has proven difficult.
DERMALOG Acquires JENETRIC’s Contactless Scan Technology
HAMBURG, Germany, June 21, 2023 — DERMALOG Identification Systems GmbH, a manufacturer of fingerprint, face, and iris identification technology, has agreed to acquire biometric identification technology company JENETRIC GmbH. JENETRIC’s optical thin-film transistor (TFT)...
Structured Light Advancement Clears Way to Image Through Noisy Channels
JOHANNESBURG, Feb. 16, 2023 — An exciting prospect in modern optics is to exploit patterns of light — how the light looks in its many degrees of freedom — often referred to as “structured light.” Each distinct pattern could form an encoding alphabet for...
Deep Learning Enables Structured Light 3D Polarimetric Imaging
NANJING, China, June 13, 2022 — Researchers at Nanjing University of Science and Technology demonstrated a dual-frequency multiplexing fringe projection profilometry (FPP) technique that is enabled by deep learning. The researchers said their approach to FPP, which is a noncontact...
Novel CMOS Technology Reboots Vision-Guided Robotics
Sep 30, 2021 — A vision-guided robot (VGR) system can be defined as a robot equipped with one or multiple vision sensors that effectively give the machine a sense of sight. While “blind” robots may suffice for certain simple applications, they quickly...
VCSEL Advancements Power 3D Sensing
Jun 10, 2021 — iStock.com/NeoLeo An innovative VCSEL design, featuring multiple active regions separated by tunnel junctions, boosts efficiency and output power while optimizing beam divergence. The emergence of 3D sensing in the consumer, industrial, and...
Simple Laser Delivers High-Dimensional, Quantum-Like Classical Light
CHANGCHUN, China, April 7, 2021 — An international team from China and South Africa used a laser to create an arbitrary dimensional light that team members characterized as “quantum like.” Using a simple laser commonly available in university teaching labs, the team...
Researchers Structure Light with Two Independent Orbital Angular Momenta
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 26, 2020 — Researchers at the University of Southern California (USC) combined twisted light and optical frequency combs to produce a new, dynamic light structure. The Optical Communications Lab at USC had been researching twisted light beams and frequency...
Supertwisted Light from a Metasurface Laser
Jun 29, 2020 — Structured light refers to the tailoring or shaping of light in all its degrees of freedom. The recent development of structured light supports applications such as optical communications, enhanced resolution in imaging, and optical trapping and...
Structured Light Could Increase Information Capacity
JOHANNESBURG, Nov. 4, 2019 — Researchers from the University of Witswatersrand (Wits) have reported on progress made in the use of structured light in quantum protocols to create a larger encoding alphabet. The researchers said that since patterns of light can be distinguished...
Face Recognition Systems and Consumer Devices
Sep 3, 2019 — Many forms of biometric authentication are technically feasible, but one in particular has won acceptance in use cases that call for high security and minimal intrusiveness for the user: face recognition. Today, most people’s interactions with face...
Researchers Demonstrate Fractal Light from Lasers
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Jan. 31, 2019 — A team from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and the University of Glasgow has demonstrated that fractal light can be created from a laser, verifying a prediction made roughly two decades ago. The researchers provide experimental evidence...
New Laser Architecture Taps Coherent Light to Probe and Control Matter
MENLO PARK and STANFORD, Calif., Nov. 26, 2018 — A new laser architecture called the Universal Light Modulator, developed by researchers affiliated with the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford University, uses coherent light to engineer complex light structures for probing and...
Complex States of Light Generated via Metasurface
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Nov. 7, 2017 — Researchers have designed a method for converting arbitrary spin angular momentum (SAM) states of light into total angular momentum states. This method is characterized by the superposition of independent orbital angular momentum (OAM), and could...
Optical Metrology Techniques Harness Structured Light Beams
Jan 31, 2017 — As a result of technological advances in recent years, researchers have at their disposal devices capable of tailoring — with almost unlimited freedom — the shape of beams of light. Computer-controlled spatial light modulators (SLMs) and...
Research Innovation Recognized by Edmund Educational Awards
BARRINGTON, N.J., Nov. 11, 2015 — Researchers behind a flow cytometer for seawater, a 3D superresolution microscopy technique and the study of bubbles took top honors in this year's Educational Awards presented by Edmund Optics Inc. The awards recognize undergraduate and graduate...
Angular Acceleration Observed in Helical Light Beams
JOHANNESBURG, April 23, 2015 — The orbital angular momentum of laser light traveling along a helical path through space can accelerate and decelerate as it spins into the distance. This is the first time that angular acceleration has been observed with light, according to...
Photonics at Play: Mere Toys Won’t Do
Dec 17, 2010 — When it comes to photonics at play, mere toys won’t do. Instead it takes advanced infrared light sources and motion-tracking sensors, along with complicated software, for a gaming product to find success with today’s sophisticated...
StockerYale: A Bright Future
SALEM, N.H., March 7, 2008 -- With StockerYale’s leading role in doped fiber production for fiber lasers, increasingly important role in providing specialized illumination for machine vision, and ever-increasing sales in medical instrumentation markets, the future looks...
