Researchers Create 3D-Printed Glass with Complex Geometry
ZÜRICH, Jan. 3, 2020 — Researchers from ETH Zürich have developed a technique to produce complex glass objects with 3D printing. The method is based on stereolithography, one of the first 3D-printing techniques developed during the 1980s. The researchers developed a special resin containing a plastic and organic molecules to which glass precursors are bonded. The resin can be processed using commercially available digital light processing technology, which irradiates the resin with UV light patterns.
Silver Improves Lightweight Monograin Layer Solar Cells
TALLINN, Estonia, Jan. 3, 2020 — Researchers at Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) have increased the efficiency of next-generation thin-film solar cells by partially substituting copper with silver in absorber material. A thin-film solar cell consists of several thin...
Scientists Develop Spectrometer to Detect Molecular Signatures
MUNICH, Jan. 2, 2020 — Scientists at the Laboratory for Attosecond Physics (LAP) have developed a spectrometer for the analysis of the molecular composition of biological samples, capable of detecting minimal variations in the chemical makeup of organic systems. The...
VTT Researchers Develop Optical Fiber Made of Cellulose
ESPOO, Finland, Jan. 2, 2020 — Researchers from VTT have developed a wood-based optical fiber. The fiber, made from cellulose, is suited for sensors that benefit from biodegradability. In the future, optical cellulose fiber may allow detecting changes in the moisture level of...
Fluorescent Dye Helps Detect Reactive Oxygen Species
BATH, England, Dec. 27, 2019 — Scientists at the University of Bath have developed a fluorescent tool for detecting reactive oxygen species based on a chemical found in mushrooms. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as free radicals and peroxides, are produced in cells under...
Researchers Aim to Build Light-Controlled Tissue Scaffolds for Cell Regeneration
AARHUS, Denmark, Dec. 19, 2019 — Researchers at Aarhus University are exploring a method of regenerating brain and heart cells using light. Their technique uses water-based nanofibers coated with organic photovoltaic nanomaterials to create light-controlled neural-stimulating...
New Light-Activated Metal Compound Kills Cancer Energy Source
COVENTRY, England, Oct. 18, 2019 — A team led by University of Warwick researchers is using light to activate a cancer-killing compound that attacks a vital energy source in cancer cells. This technique could be used not only to treat cancer, but also to help reduce side effects of...
2019 Nobel Prize in Physics Awarded
STOCKHOLM, Oct. 16, 2019 — The 2019 Nobel Prize in physics recognizes three individuals for their contributions to understanding Earth’s place within the known universe. Half the prize goes to astrophysicist James Peebles for his “theoretical discoveries in...
Graphene-Based Measurement Technique Boosts Optical Resolution
GÖTTINGEN, Germany, Oct. 11, 2019 — Researchers at the University of Göttingen have developed a new technique that exploits the unusual properties of graphene to optically measure extremely small distances — to the order of one ångström — for the first...
Spectrometer Measures Effects of Photon Momentum in Strong-Field Ionization
FRANKFURT, Germany, Oct. 7, 2019 — Einstein received the Nobel Prize for explaining the photoelectric effect — that, simply put, a single atom is irradiated with light. Einstein believed that light consists of photons that transfer only quantized energy to the electron of an atom. If...
HUBER+SUHNER to Acquire BKtel Group
HERISAU, Switzerland, Oct. 3, 2019 — HUBER+SUHNER have signed a purchase agreement to acquire German fiber optic specialist BKtel for approximately $50 million. The deal is subject to the approval of the German Bundeskartellamt (Federal Cartel Office) and is expected to close in...
Alertgy, Okmetic Oy Win at Tech Showcase for Sensor Innovations
GRENOBLE, France, Oct. 2, 2019 — SEMI has announced Alertgy and Okmetic Oy as winners of the SEMI MEMS & Imaging Sensors Summit Technology Showcase. The Alertgy noninvasive glucose monitor was crowned the best imaging technology, and the Okmetic Oy silicon substrate...
PINOVA Capital Acquires Sill Optics
WENDELSTEIN, Germany, Oct. 1, 2019 — Munich-based private equity firm PINOVA Capital has acquired all shares in Sill Optics along with Christoph Sieber, managing director. Sieber holds a minority stake in the company with all other shares held by PINOVA Capital.
Hollow-Core Fiber Technology Shows Low Loss, Longer Transmission
SOUTHAMPTON, England, Sept. 30, 2019 — The Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton has further advanced hollow-core fiber technology, a potential alternative to traditional optical fibers. At the 2019 European Conference on Optical Communication in Dublin,...
