Lasers White Papers
VCSEL Measurement Solutions
Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are a type of semiconductor laser diode. Unlike edge emitting laser diodes, VCSELs emit upwards and thus can be easily packaged as emitter arrays containing hundreds of emitters on a single chip. Many VCSEL applications run on batteries and will need to minimize power consumption, therefore, characterization of VCSEL power, beam profile, noise, etc. is critical. This can make VCSEL test and measurement a challenging task.

This article reviews Doppler lidar, which is widely used to measure the velocity of solid objects, winds, and aerosols. After reading this white paper, you will understand the entangled relationship between range and velocity resolution; and why it...
Measuring Small-Beam MFD: Overcoming the Challenges
Small beams are used in many critical applications, such as such as fiber optic coupling efficiency, defect scanning, optical design, and optical fabrication process control. Yet often, they are not directly profiled because determining the size of...
Remote API
The Remote API is a means of communication between a controller and a laser marking engine using Ethernet or a serial cable. The controller can be a PLC, a PC, or any other device capable of transmitting commands using the protocol described herein....
Linear Stages and Piezo Flexure Mechanisms Engineered to Advance Precision Motion Control
Part I: What Machine Builders want in a Precision Linear Motor Stage: Precision automation engineers have different requirements than their colleagues in the instrumentation sector: robustness, size, dynamics, and 24/7 reliability. Novel linear...
Measuring Aspheres in a 3-D World
This white paper provides a basic practical guide on the benefits of 3-D measurements of aspheres as well as a couple of real-world examples of parts that we have manufactured. This white paper also goes into detail why one may prefer measuring...
X-Ray Toroids
Optical fabrication techniques discussed to produce bent crystal analyzers that conform to toroidal surfaces for hard and soft x-ray applications including x-ray spectroscopy, ultrafast laser excited x-ray sources, imaging, and plasma diagnostics.
Tunable Laser Light Sources Advance Quantum Research
A remarkable number of photonic applications call for continuous-wave (cw) laser light that is widely tunable throughout the visible range of the spectrum. However, this spectral region remains difficult to access with conventional tunable laser...
Joined Fast Together: e-Mobility and Laser Welding in Automotive Production
The future of the automobile is the subject of hot debate. China is the leading market for electric cars and US startups have completely changed the approach for building a car. Wherever the road leads, one thing is sure – the latest automotive...
X-Mode™ DBRs Enable Extended Tuning Range
The Photodigm family of high-power edge-emitting Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) laser diodes is based on Photodigm’s proprietary single epi growth DBR laser architecture. The Photodigm DBR laser architecture consists of an electrically pumped...

CloudMinds's XI™ is the world’s first cloud AI based handheld Raman spectrometer with 785nm laser excitation. Being fully integrated with Cloudminds’s Data A1 smartphone, operation of XI™ is fully automated with an intuitive android app suitable for...
Operating Edge-Emitting Pulsed Laser Diodes with Short Pulses
Many applications in Time-of-Flight (ToF) distance measurement require temporally fast optical pulses with rise times in the sub nano-second regime. The application note explores the multiple challenges in generating short pulses with PLDs for...
Diode Lasers Enable Diverse Therapeutic Applications
Diode lasers have become the dominant laser type used in therapeutic applications. This is because these workhorse devices provide lower cost of ownership, a wider choice of output wavelength and power, compact, rugged packaging, and superior...
The Future of Optics: How Optical Product Design will Change the World
New technologies are creating new opportunities in the optomechanical engineering space. Prepare for what lies ahead in optical product design by reading what 13 experts have to say about how optical product design has changed and where it’s going....
Slow Axis Collimators for Laser Diodes
Diode laser technology is advancing at a breathtaking pace as suppliers add new wavelengths and improve output power but still present one big challenge to the system designer: their output is inherently asymmetric. FISBA solves this with their...
Advantages of Optically Pumped Semiconductor Lasers – Invariant Beam Properties
The optically pumped semiconductor laser (OPSL) is a unique patented technology that combines the most desirable attributes of laser diodes, DPSS (Diode Pumped Solid State) and Ion lasers, while eliminating a number of their compromising...
New Approach for High Reliability, Low Loss Splicing between Silica and ZBLAN Fibers
In the past decade, ZBLAN (ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-NaF) fibers have drawn increasing interest for laser operations at wavelengths where Fused Silica-based (SiO2) fibers do not perform well. One limitation to the expansion of ZBLAN fiber lasers today is the...
White Dwarf and Monaco: A Simple Turnkey Source of <10 fs Pulses
This white paper describes a simple source of ultrashort (<9 femtoseconds) laser pulses: an optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifier (OPCPA) incorporating a high repetition rate ytterbium fiber amplifier – the Coherent Monaco. The integrated...
Modifying Laser Beams: There’s No Way Around It, So Here’s How
In order to apply a laser to an industrial process, medical therapy, or communications technology, it is usually necessary to modify the laser beam to achieve the desired results. Laser beam measurement tools make this possible. Here's how to match...
Six Best Practices for Optical Product Design Teams
In their groundbreaking study Six Myths of Product Development, Stefan Thomke and Donald Reinertsen exposed common fallacies of product development and presented best practices for overcoming them (Harvard Business Review, May 2012). This eGuide...
