Diagnostic Tool Uses NIR to Detect Risk of Heart Attack, Stroke
COVENTRY, England, and MELBOURNE, Australia, Aug. 21, 2017 — Scientists increased the wavelength in a tool used to detect fatty deposit build-up in arteries to NIR wavelengths, and found that they could use the tool to selectively identify plaques with internal bleeding typically associated with high-risk plaque deposits. To investigate human atherosclerotic plaques, 50 samples were obtained exhibiting a mixture of advanced atherosclerosis including histological characteristics of unstable as well as stable plaque pathology. Using

PROVO, Utah, Aug. 15, 2017 — A custom 3D printer built using digital light processor stereolithography (DLP-SLA) has demonstrated the ability to print a viable microfluidic device small enough achieve flow channel cross sections as small as 18 micrometers (μm) × 20...
New Algorithms Improve Lensless Microscopes
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, and TAMPERE, Finland, Aug. 15, 2017 — Using special algorithms scientists have significantly improved computational imaging of the optical signal in lensless microscopes. The algorithms not only generate the image, but also improve the optical signal, making it possible to obtain images...
Color in Nanocrystalline LEDs Can Be Tuned
MUNICH, Aug. 14, 2017 — A novel, economical way to tune the color of LEDs by altering the semiconductor nanocrystals used to make them could be feasible for industrial-scale production. In the case of some semiconducting materials used in LEDs, the color can be tuned by...
Data Transmission via Terahertz Multiplexer
PROVIDENCE, R.I., Aug. 14, 2017 — A method for multiplexing data — the ability to send multiple signals through a single channel of a voice or data communication system — carried on terahertz waves and high-frequency radiation may enable the next generation of ultra-high bandwidth...
Exceptional Points Enhance Sensing at Nanoscale
ST. LOUIS, Aug. 14, 2017 — A discovery regarding the sensing capability of microresonators could impact the creation of biomedical devices, electronics and biohazard detection devices. A novel sensing scheme for enhancing the sensitivity of optical microcavities involved the...
Tiny Terahertz Laser May Aid Industrial Imaging and Chemical Detection
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Aug. 11, 2017 — A new terahertz design that can be etched on microchips boosts the power output of chip-mounted terahertz lasers by eighty percent. The novel design shows promise for future industrial imaging and chemical detection applications. The standard method...
A Tabletop OCT Approach Utilizes Extreme Ultraviolet Radiation
JENA, Germany, Aug. 10, 2017 — 3D noninvasive imaging with nanoscale axial resolution has been demonstrated using a high-harmonic extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation source. Specifically, XUV radiation was used to perform optical coherence tomography (OCT) at laboratory scale....
53-Attosecond Light Pulse Sets a Record
ORLANDO, Fla., Aug. 9, 2017 — The demonstration of a 53-attosecond X-ray flash is the fastest light pulse recorded to date, and beats the research team’s own record of a 67-attosecond extreme UV light pulse, set in 2012. Soft X-ray pulse duration of 53 attoseconds and...
Microscopy Technique Images Thick, Multicellular Samples in 3D
CHAMPAIGN, Ill., Aug. 8, 2017 — Gradient light interference microscopy (GLIM), an add-on module to a commercial differential interference contrast (DIC) microscope, provides a novel technique for extracting 3D information from thin and thick unlabeled specimens. Unlike other...
Fluorescent Sensor Detects Drug-Induced Protein Stress in Cells
STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Aug. 8, 2017 — A fluorescent sensor that becomes activated in a cell when misfolded proteins begin to aggregate could be an effective way to detect protein aggregates caused by drug-induced proteome stress prior to cell death. Researchers designed an unstable...
