Quantum Emitter Integration May Enable Quantum Circuits
ULSAN, South Korea, Dec. 14, 2017 — Researchers integrated silicon photonic devices with a solid-state single photon emitter, using a hybrid approach that combines silicon photonic waveguides with quantum dots. The silicon photonic waveguides were used for manipulating light, and the InAs/InP quantum dots were used to generate light efficiently at wavelengths spanning the O-band and C-band. The research team removed the quantum dots via a pick-and-place procedure, using a microprobe tip combined with a focused ion beam and
Graphene Optical Modulators Could Speed Communications
BERKELEY, Calif., May 12, 2011 — Digital communications speed limits could soon be broken, thanks to a new graphene-based optical device that could theoretically reach as high as 500 GHz for a single modulator. Xiang Zhang, an engineering professor at the University of...
CEA-Leti Reveals CMOS-Compatible Laser
GRENOBLE, France, April 14, 2010 — CEA-Leti has demonstrated a fully CMOS-compatible laser source coupled to a silicon waveguide, a major milestone toward the WADIMOS project’s goal of fabricating an optical interconnect network on a chip in CMOS foundries. WADIMOS is an...
Strained Silicon Enables Electro-Optic Modulator
Jun 1, 2006 — A switchable silicon waveguide demonstrated by scientists at Danmarks Tekniske Universitet in Lyngby, Denmark, points to the possibility of integrating electronics and photonics in monolithic components for computing and telecommunications...
Silicon Laser Is Realized
Dec 1, 2004 — At the University of California, Los Angeles, scientists have reported the demonstration of what they believe to be the first silicon laser, a feat that exploits the Raman effect. Ozdal Boyraz and Bahram Jalali have described pulsed Raman laser...
