Arrigoni discusses the various applications of lasers to biology and medicine, and categorizes them by the type of process involved and the most significant trends:
  • Fluorescence (spectral) imaging by exogenous or encoded markers (mostly fluorescence).
  • Imaging and spectroscopic imaging by native fluorescent probes and nonlinear processes (harmonic generation, CARS, vibrational imaging).
  • Diagnostic imaging by other processes (interferometric, photoacoustic).
  • Laser-driven ablative processes based on nano-, pico- and femtosecond pulses (therapeutic).
  • Laser-driven thermal processes (therapeutic).
  • Laser-driven photodisruption.
Lasers have become a ubiquitous tool in biology and medicine. Their presence in these applications, both in the research and the diagnostics/therapeutic environment, continues to grow. This demonstrates the vitality of the technology as the performance of laser tools increases, their market price or price/performance decreases, and their ease of use, beam delivery, and lifetime continue to improve, resulting in an increasingly compelling case for adoption. In addition, laser-based techniques have proved themselves to be very resilient, as very few applications to biology and medicine have been replaced by nonlaser technologies.

Arrigoni describes the interplay between applications development and laser technology development, illustrating examples of laser technologies developed directly for biomedical applications, as well as technologies developed for other purposes that have found an unexpected “home” in medical applications.

Finally, Arrigoni provides an outlook for the size of the market and the way it has evolved along with the development of applications and laser technologies.

About the presenter
 
Marco ArrigoniMarco Arrigoni received a Master of Science in electrical engineering in 1984 from Politecnico di Milano, where he majored in lasers. He joined Coherent as R&D laser engineer the same year. In 1995, he became market development manager for Coherent in Asia, subsequently managing Coherent Asian operations from the Tokyo office. Upon his return to California in 2000, he worked in several different positions in sales and marketing management. In 2007, he took his current position as director of strategic marketing. Arrigoni holds patents related to design and applications of lasers, and he has authored articles about laser technology and its applications to space communication, spectroscopy, and nonlinear microscopy for peer-reviewed and technical magazine publications.
