The idea of employing higher-order surfaces in optical systems to improve performance has been around for decades. Designing and fabricating aspheric lenses in larger quantities and at a quality level sufficient for optical systems, however, began only about 20 years ago.

Considerations of freeform surfaces in optical designs originated at around the same time, but the evolution over the last decade has been significant. Viewers of Fuchs’ presentation will come away with a sense of the expanded number of options for measuring and manufacturing these higher-order surfaces.

About the presenter

Ulrike FuchsUlrike Fuchs, Ph.D., joined asphericonin in 2010 after earning a doctorate in physics from Friedrich Schiller University Jena in Germany. Fuchs is now asphericon’s vice president of strategy and innovation and was recently elected to the Optica board of directors. At asphericon, she coordinates all research and development activities and presents speeches on aspherics and freeform optics. Throughout her career, Fuchs has authored more than 70 publications and holds six registered patent families.
