An optical design may function excellently in design software but completely miss performance targets in practice or result in poor yields. Understanding the actual manufacturing process allows designers to design and tolerance for manufacturability. Schwertz presents traditional glass lens manufacturing basics, rules of thumb for designing manufacturable lens element geometries, and ways to reduce the sensitivities of designs. Taking extra time early on to consider these details can improve performance and yield while reducing costs in the long run.

About the presenter
Katie SchwertzKatie Schwertz is a design engineering manager in Edmund Optics' Tucson office. She has over a decade of optical and optomechanical design experience and now manages a team of optical and optomechanical designers. Schwertz received an M.S. in optical sciences from the University of Arizona Wyant College of Optical Sciences and a B.S. in optics from the University of Rochester's Institute of Optics. She is a co-author of the SPIE book Field Guide to Optomechanical Design and Analysis (2010) and Photonics Rules of Thumb, 3rd ed. (2020).
