Metalenses are a part of the flat lenses category, which also includes Fresnel and diffractive lenses. Hence, Wyrowski’s initial aim is to offer an overview of the concepts associated with the flattening of lenses. Following this, he delves into considerations such as the commonalities and distinctions that exist between a diffractive lens and a metalens, how each one is constructed and modeled, and what the process of replacing a smooth lens surface with a flat one entails. When developing optics software, striking an optimal balance between the simulation speed and precision is of paramount importance. Flat lenses have the same diameter as thick lenses, which are typically a few centimeters or millimeters long, with nanostructures spread over their surface. It is also anticipated that flat lenses will be employed with thick lenses in systems. This leads to a multi-scale setup that necessitates the use of highly sophisticated simulation methods to maintain a suitable balance between accuracy and speed. Wyrowski presents approaches to manage this situation.
