Miniaturized Tunable Objective Lenses Enable Next-Level Endoscopy

The laparoscopy market will account for 16 billion USD by 2030 at a compound annual growth rate of about 9%. North America's share of the market will count for more than 30%. This growth has been enabled by the development of high-resolution sensors and stereoscopic vision as well as the miniaturization of the footprint of optic and photonic systems at the distal end of endoscopes, such as miniaturized cameras. Other developments affecting the growth of laparoscopic procedures include new auto-focus camera systems connected to endoscopes for manual use or for surgical robots. Beside auto-focus, other advantageous properties accompany this next level of endoscopes, like reduced heat dissemination at the distal end, increased working distance range, higher optical resolution compared to existing solutions available in the market, and brighter images.

These technological innovations have triggered new applications in endoscopic surgery such as in situ analytics and high-performance fluorescence imaging. A key driver in these new applications has been the compact camera design itself, which includes the camera sensor, the tunable lens, and all spherical and plano optical components. Zund explores this newly developed camera technology in his presentation.

About the presenter

René ZündRené Zünd completed his apprenticeship as a precision optician at Leica. He then studied systems engineering at the Interstate University for Applied Science in Buchs, Switzerland, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in systems engineering. With further studies at the University Ravensburg-Weingarten, Germany, he earned his Master of Science degree in optical systems engineering. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Liechtenstein. Zünd worked as an optical designer for almost eight years before he became managing director of Feinwerkoptik Zünd AG in 2012. He is interested in sports, loves his family, and is inspired by photonics and entrepreneurship every day.
