The field of laser optics, while by no means new, continues to be a subject of confusion and frustration, but also exciting innovation.

Recent developments in laser technologies have enabled ever-higher powers, with industrial systems exceeding 20 kW and defense systems achieving 100 kW or more. The demands that these systems place onto key aspects of the laser optics that comprise the beam path can be extreme, particularly with respect to laser damage, thermal management, and surface finish. Unfortunately, confidently validating the performance and reliability of optics in systems such as these is often impractical, leading to a heavy reliance on modeling and careful component specification. Consequently, misspecification or overspecification of laser damage, absorption, surface quality, and other related characteristics can be costly and lead to product failures or missed opportunities for improvements.

Excelitas optics for high-power lasers In this talk, Turner reviews the state of the art of key aspects of laser optics design, manufacture, and testing. He also discusses recent innovations and areas of active development.

Trey TurnerTrey Turner is vice president of engineering for Excelitas Technologies Corp. and is responsible for research and development activities at Excelitas' site (formerly REO) in Boulder, Colo. He was previously CTO at REO, where he worked since 1994 in various roles, including R&D, production management, business development, and strategy. Over that time, he developed a deep expertise in the field of laser optics and the associated design, manufacturing, and test methodologies. He oversaw numerous innovations related to laser damage, thin-film design and deposition, optical polishing, and metrology. Turner holds a master's degree in physics from the University of Texas and a bachelor's degree in physics from Lawrence University.
