Swierad introduces a novel approach in the consumer electronics market by leveraging femtosecond fiber lasers for the laser cleaving of ultra-thin glass (UTG), distinguishing this method from the conventional use of picosecond pulses.

Swierad and his team demonstrate that ultrashort femtosecond pulses can achieve a glossy finish on UTG surfaces, significantly reducing the need for mechanical post-processing. This advancement is crucial for a wide array of consumer electronics, extending beyond the realm of foldable displays. By avoiding mechanical post-processing, the aesthetic appeal of electronic devices can be enhanced, and contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing waste and energy consumption. Swierad and his team’s research meticulously examines the application of these femtosecond pulses, assessing their effect on material processing outcomes in various conditions. By optimizing pulse duration and pitch, we have successfully identified the optimal settings for enhancing the cleaving quality of UTG and laminated UTG, which is vital for meeting the high-quality standards of today's consumer electronics. This method also offers advantages for processing polymers like PLA and PMMA, which are prevalent in the electronics industry, demonstrating its broad applicability.

Embracing femtosecond laser technology marks a significant advancement in manufacturing efficiency and product quality within the consumer electronics sector. The findings not only showcase the technological innovation of employing femtosecond pulses for achieving superior surface finishes but also argue that this approach can enhance product durability and performance. About the presenter

Dariusz SwieradDariusz Swierad, Ph.D., is an experienced executive in photonics and adjacent industries, working in management positions from engineering to sales and marketing. Since 2018, he has been director of sales and marketing at Fluence.technology, a company developing and manufacturing next-generation industrial grade, reliable, long-lifetime, serviceless, ultrafast femtosecond laser technology.

From 2017 to 2018, Swierad led the development of a miniaturized atomic clock at Teledyne e2v, and prior to that, he was a field sales engineer at TOPTICA Photonics UK, developing the laser market for quantum and terahertz applications. He is a physics graduate from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun in Poland, where he also worked at the National Laboratory for Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics (KL FAMO). Swierad was awarded a doctorate from the University of Birmingham in the U.K., where he developed stable and ultrastable laser systems for optical atomic clocks, including the Space Optical Clock for the International Space Station.
