Shortwave infrared (SWIR) imagers have evolved significantly in the last five years as high resolution and smaller pitch have become available. These improvements have come in addition to the development of newer materials and the availability of wider wavelength ranges, which allow many more use cases for SWIR devices, including in linear and area arrays and cameras. Ettenberg provides an overview of the current state of the art in SWIR technology and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the various technologies in different applications. These technologies will have wider-ranging system effects that users should be aware of before purchasing a SWIR detector/camera.

Martin EttenbergMartin H. Ettenberg, Ph.D., is CEO and founder of Princeton Infrared Technologies Inc., a company dedicated to the commercialization of NIR/SWIR detection technologies. He has developed SWIR detectors for over 20 years, including previous experience at Sensors Unlimited Inc. and Goodrich Corp. Ettenberg graduated with master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of Virginia Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He also received a bachelor’s degree in materials science and engineering from Cornell University.
