Researchers have been looking for an alternative method of detecting the presence of dilute concentrations of blood on fabric. They have found a solution in thermal imaging with FLIR thermal imaging cameras. While blood is not visible on its own in the infrared spectrum, these researchers discovered it was possible to create a thermal signature by introducing water vapor to a bloodstained sample.
