SWIR imaging significantly extends the possibilities for industrial machine vision applications beyond the visible range. But while broadband light sources are adequate to illuminate some SWIR applications, narrow-band SWIR LEDs now deliver high enough power to offer a more targeted alternative for machine vision lighting. This paper will briefly outline key sensor and lighting technologies underlying SWIR imaging, and survey the potentially new and unique applications it enables.
