Bright White Organic LED Developed

Using precisely calibrated thicknesses of bright blue, red and green light-emit-ting layers, researchers at Academia Sinica's Institute of Chemistry in Taipei, Taiwan, have developed a bright white organic LED that produces an intensity of 24,700 cd/m2 at 15 V. The diode could prove to be a valuable asset in applications ranging from flat pan-el displays to microscope light sources.

As reported in the Dec. 17 issue of Applied Physics Letters, the emitted light's International Commission on Illumination coordinates are stable from 6 to 12 V. The measured electroluminescence spectra cover 400 to 700 nm, showing emission spikes at 450 and 575 nm and a valley at 520 nm.
