Rockwell Delivers VLWIR Assemblies for Satellite System

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. August 29 -- Rockwell Scientific Co. has delivered two very long wave infrared (VLWIR) sensor chip assemblies to Raytheon Co. for use on the US space-based infrared system (SBIRS) ow program.

The assemblies, which detect light in the infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, will be the "eyes" for a fleet of low earth-orbiting satellites that will detect, track and identify hostile missiles through all phases of their flight.

Raytheon is competing to provide the sensor payloads for the first two SBIRS low satellites that are scheduled for launch in fiscal years 2006 and 2007.
