Luna Innovations Acquires Nascent Technology Solutions

BLACKSBURG, Va., May 19 -- Luna Innovations Inc., a developer of fiber optic sensing, integrated measurement systems and advanced materials, announced today it has acquired Nascent Technology Solutions LLC, a company founded in 1996 with technologies licensed from NASA's Langley Research Center that develops instruments for nondestructive evaluation (NDE).
NDE enables structural evaluations without damage or disassembly of the structure; Nascent's products are used in inspections of objects from microelectronics to ship hulls.
Luna Innovations also said it will open a new location in Hampton Roads, Va., to develop partnerships with universities and government agencies in the area. It opened its first "branch" location in Charlottesville, Va., in the summer of 2001 to further develop relationships at the University of Virginia. The Charlottesville office houses Luna's medical group and specializes in corrosion services.
The company announced last week it has devised a photonic solution to monitor structural fatigue in aircraft that "eliminates weight and space issues and problems with electromagnetic interference typically associated with strain tests."
Luna Innovations has launched five new companies in the past three years, including two now-independent companies: Luna Technologies, a developer of fiber optic component test equipment, and Luna Energy, a company backed by Fortune 100 oil service company Baker Engineering that develops sensors for the oil and gas industry.
