CDT Starts R&D Program, Grants LEP License

CAMBRIDGE, UK (20 May, 2003) - Light-emitting polymer (LEP) technology developer Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) and media services and equipment group Thomson (France) announced they will participate in a two-year joint research and development program to develop full-color active matrix LEP display technologies.

CDT's facilities and technical staff will be used to incorporate its knowledge of LEP materials, inkjet printing and display testing with Thomson's experience in display conception and testing to develop technology in inkjet printing of full-color LEP displays and display device architectures. CDT said it expects to develop additional intellectual property in LEP inkjet printing technology that will be offered to CDT licensees who wish to manufacture high-resolution, high-brightness and large-form-factor LEP displays.

David Fyfe, CEO of CDT, said, "The combined advantages of inkjet deposited LEP materials and active matrix backplanes will enable the next generation of LEP displays and could significantly improve the cost/performance of displays used in a wide array of product markets, from cell phones to televisions."

CDT also announced it has granted a manufacturing license for its LEP technology to Dai Nippon Printing Co. Ltd., which is developing displays for graphics arts applications.
