Honeywell Licenses LCD Patents to Toshiba

MORRIS TOWNSHIP, N.J., July 25 -- Honeywell announced it has granted a license enabling Toshiba Corp. to use two Honeywell US patents relating to liquid crystal displays (LCDs) found in a wide variety of electronic consumer and business products.

The patented technologies reduce screen flicker and drive the greyscale of the pixels, or dots, that form images displayed on a screen. The technologies are widely used in LCD applications, including desktop PC monitors, notebook computers, televisions, personal digital assistants and other applications.

"This agreement enables Toshiba and Honeywell to benefit from years of pioneering research by Honeywell's aerospace business on LCD technology for aircraft cockpit displays. Toshiba has joined a growing number of LCD makers, such as NEC and Winbond, who have licensed these fundamental LCD patents owned by Honeywell," said Michael Ward, Honeywell'd vice president of licensing.

Under the agreement, Toshiba is granted nonexclusive, worldwide rights to use certain patented Honeywell LCD technologies covered by US patents 5,061,920 and 5,041,823 and their foreign counterparts. The license agreement extends to LCD products (including modules and panels) that employ Toshiba drivers.

Toshiba provides LCD drivers to manufacturers of display products.
