Company Ally to Provide Free-Space Optics Products in China

Carrier-class optical transmission equipment provider LightPointe of San Diego will manufacture free-space optics products for the Chinese market under the Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. brand as a result of a partnership agreement between the companies. The alliance enables Huawei, a telecommunications equipment company based in Shenzhen, China, to provide a high-capacity connectivity option to its customers.

The free-space optics technology provides high-bandwidth connectivity through the air at a much lower cost than buried fiber optic cable, and is suitable where spectrum for microwave radios is unavailable or too expensive.

LightPointe's protocol-independent products integrate into optical fiber and mobile wireless networks and provide bandwidth from 10 Mb to 2.5 Gb for carrier and enterprise customers.

Glossary
free-space optics
Free-space optics (FSO), also known as optical wireless communication or optical wireless networking, refers to the transmission of data using modulated beams of light through free space (air or a vacuum) rather than using physical cables or fiber optics. FSO systems leverage the principles of optical communication, similar to fiber optic communication, but they transmit signals through the atmosphere over relatively short distances. Key features and aspects of free-space optics include: ...
