Michael J. Fister, president and CEO of Cadence Design Systems Inc., has been elected to its board of directors. Fister has been president and CEO of Cadence since May. Prior to that, he was senior vice president and general manager of the Intel Corp's Enterprise Platforms Group. Cadence is a San Jose, Calif., supplier of electronic design technologies and engineering services used to accelerate and manage the design of semiconductors, computer systems, networking and telecommunications equipment, consumer electronics and other electronics-based products. . . . Eastman Kodak Co. has said it has developed a new medical imaging x-ray film that will produce the same image quality available today, using half the radiation dose. The film will also feature an increased "speed" that will reduce the need for retakes, Kodak said. The film will be tested this month at healthcare facilities in the US and in several European countries. . . . Indium Corp. of America announced it is being represented in the Central New York area by Progressive Technologies, of Syracuse, for sales and service of its assembly products. Indium said that Todd Fetterolf, president of Progressive Technologies, has worked in the industry for a number of years in key roles in sales and technical support. Indium is a Utica-based supplier of electronics assembly materials, including solder pastes, solder preforms, fluxes, lead-free (Pb-free) solder alloys, underfill materials and die-attach materials, and of commercial grade and high-purity indium. It has factories in North America, Europe and Asia. . . . The NanoBusiness Alliance, a sponsor of the second annual Emerging Technologies Conference at MIT, to be held Sept. 29-30, 2004 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has announced a call for submissions from companies with annual gross sales of $50 million or less and with innovations in electronics, telecommunications, manufacturing, nanotechnology, computing, energy, transportation, logistics, pharmaceuticals or medicine. Thirty companies will be selected through a jury process led by Technology Review Magazine, which produces the conference. For details and submission information, visit: www.tretc.com

Glossary
indium
Metal used in components of the crystalline semiconductor alloys indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs), indium gallium arsenide phosphide (InGaAsP), and the binary semiconductor indium phosphide (InP). The first two are lattice-matched to InP as the light-emitting medium for lasers or light-emitting diodes in the 1.06- to 1.7-µm range, and the last are used as a substrate and cladding layer.
x-ray film
A film or plate that is usually coated on both sides with a very fast emulsion that is sensitive to x-rays, and used to record x-ray diffraction patterns photographically.
