SAN DIEGO, Jan. 21 -- Jmar Technologies Inc. has established a scientific advisory board to provide guidance on the design, development and application of its compact soft x-ray microscope (XRM) for 2-D and 3-D visualization of single cells and polymers at sub-50 nanometer resolution.

Advisory board members include Gary Mitchell, PhD, a researcher at the Dow Chemical Co. and the recipient of Dow's Analytical Sciences Division's highest internal award for x-ray spectromicroscopy of polymeric materials; Hans Hertz, head of the Biomedical and X-Ray Physics Division, Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden and a developer of a compact x-ray microscope for research in biology and medicine; Carolyn Larabell, PhD, a member of the University of California (UC) at San Francisco's anatomy department and Berkeley Lab's Physical Biosciences Division and an expert in x-ray microscopy for biological applications; Mark Ellisman, PhD, a professor of neurosciences and bioengineering, director of the Center for Research on Biological Structure and director of the National Center of Microscopy and Imaging Research at UC/San Diego.

Jmar said the microscope will enable research facilities worldwide to rapidly carry out x-ray microscopy in their own facilities for the first time; it is expected to be available in 2006.

The company makes laser-based equipment for imaging, analysis and fabrication at the nanoscale and provides support for the US government's Defense Microelectronics Activity semiconductor fabrication facility. It is also involved in developing biological and chemical sensors for homeland security, environmental and utility infrastructure industries.
