Bookham Ships EDFAs, Launches Transceivers

ANAHEIM, Calif., March 10 -- Bookham Inc., a provider of optical components, modules and subsystems, announced today it has shipped more than 2000 erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) subsystems. Its intelligent optical platform series of products is on display this week at OFC/NFOEC 2005. The company is also launching a new line of 10 Gb/s XFP SR transceiver modules it says are among the first in the industry to meet Telcordia standards for optoelectronic devices used in telecommunications (GR-468-CORE benchmark).

Bookham also unveiled a 10 Gb/s widely tunable 300-pin transponder that it says is the first fully tunable module from an optical components manufacturer that incorporates an internally produced laser and receiver. Visitors to the Bookham booth (2213) will be able to see the transponder, the T1X, for the first time. Bookham said it enables cost-effective tunability in long haul systems and is the first deployment of its DS-DBR tunable laser.

The initial devices in the transceiver series are the IGF-32311 and IGF-17311 modules. The IGF-32311 is a multiprotocol, 1310-nm XFP transceiver for use in SONET/SDH, 10-G Ethernet and 10-G Fibre Channel applications; the IGF-17311 is a 1310-nm XFP transceiver for use in 10-G Ethernet applications and meets the 10GBASE-LR specification.

The first Bookham XFP SR modules are supplemented by products including the IGF-32511, an intermediate-reach (40-km) device that meets SONET/SDH IR2 and Ethernet 10GBASE-ER specifications; the IGF-32611 LR2 (80-km) device; and the IGF-32312 extended-temperature XFP SR multiprotocol transceiver. The company said a dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) XFP transceiver is also under development.

erbium-doped fiber amplifier
An optical fiber that can be used to amplify an optical input. Erbium rare earth ions are added to the fiber core material as a dopant in typical levels of a few hundred parts per million. The fiber is highly transparent at the erbium lasing wavelength of two to nine microns. When pumped by a laser diode, optical gain is created, and amplification occurs.
