Defense contractor Northrop Grumman Corp. of Pascagoula, Miss., has named Harry Miles vice president of enterprise process development and quality for its Ship Systems sector. Previously, Miles led the Six Sigma program for Northrop Grumman's Space Technology sector. He has also been involved in satellite and high-energy laser programs. . . . Arroyo Sciences Inc., a developer of new sensor fusion technologies, has filed an application for a patent on explosive device detection technology for its Deepscan system, which infrared detectors to isolate suicide bombers wearing or carrying camouflaged explosives. The company, based in Altadena, Calif., said Deepscan can also be used to improve security at government buildings, nuclear power plants, airports, docks, subway entrances, border crossings and other high-traffic locations such as sporting events and concerts. The technology was invented by Sandeep Gulati, a board member of Viaspace, which owns Arroyo Sciences. . . . Terry L. Moshier was appointed president and CEO of Research Electro-Optics, a Boulder, Colo., manufacturer of precision optical components and optical assemblies for the defense, aerospace, semiconductor, telecommunications and laser markets. Robert Knollenberg, founder of Research Electro-Optics will continue to be chairman of the company. Moshier was formerly president and chief operating officer of Asyst Technologies Inc. and previously worked at Telxon Products, SCI Systems, Motorola and Texas Instruments. . . . Leonard LeBlanc was named chairman of the board at Oplink Communications, a Fremont, Calif., photonic foundry and provider of optical networking components. He replaces Herbert Chang, who resigned. LeBlanc has served on Oplink's board since July 2000. The company also appointed Hua Lee as a new independent director. Lee is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and was department chairman from 1998 to 2002.
