Anthony J. Campillo, PhD, will join OSA as its senior director of science policy, effective Jan. 4. Campillo is an active OSA volunteer and fellow and is editor-in-chief of the OSA-published journal Optics Letters. He will provide strategic anthonycampillo.jpgdirection on the society’s scientific programming, using his technical expertise to help expand OSA programs and activities. Campillo has more than 40 years of experience in optics and photonics and has been a member of OSA since 1966. He received his PhD in electrical engineering from Cornell University in 1973. Throughout his career, Campillo has conducted research on laser development at General Telephone & Electronic Laboratories, ultrafast spectroscopy and nonlinear optics for Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory and environmental chemistry and aerosol optics at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Most recenlty, he was head of the US Naval Research Laboratory optical physics branch, where his research focused on laser chemical/biological analysis, microcavity effects, photonics and nanotechnology. He is also a fellow of the American Physical Society and has been an adjunct professor of chemistry at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. OSA said its director of science policy has a central role in promoting the generation, application and archiving of knowledge in optics and photonics worldwide.

nonlinear optics
Nonlinear optics is a branch of optics that studies the optical phenomena that occur when intense light interacts with a material and induces nonlinear responses. In contrast to linear optics, where the response of a material is directly proportional to the intensity of the incident light, nonlinear optics involves optical effects that are not linearly dependent on the input light intensity. These nonlinear effects become significant at high light intensities, such as those produced by...
