Newport Acquires Picarro Business

Newport Corp. of Irvine, Calif., has acquired the Laser Products division of Picarro Inc. The Ottawa-based unit designs and manufactures solid-state lasers primarily for the life and health sciences and process control markets. As part of Newport’s Spectra-Physics Lasers Div., it will extend the Excelsior product line with the addition of the Cyan 488-nm blue laser, which has applications in bioinstrumentation. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

In another announcement, Newport has received orders for seven Reveal lasers from the US Drug Enforcement Administration in Alexandria, Va. The portable high-power lasers will be used in crime-scene investigations to detect latent fingerprints for identification and for uncovering body fluids and biological matter for DNA testing.
