Feb 2007
Sabeus Corp. of Calabasas, Calif., has received an Innovation Adoption Award from Innovation Works, a Pittsburgh-based Ben Franklin Technology Partner. The company operates a manufacturing facility in Freeport, Pa., and produces fiber optic sensing systems for telecommunications, oil and gas exploration, and defense applications. The $45,000 grant will assist in Sabeus’ collaborative work with the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson Center for Product Innovation to improve its manufacturing processes. The goal is to increase the speed and output capacity of operations as well as to enhance product reliability.

The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
