Arthur W. Zafiropoulo, chairman and CEO of Ultratech Inc., has been appointed director emeritus on the board of industry association Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI), it was announced today. Zafiropoulo served as chairman of the SEMI board from 2002-2003 and has been a member since 1995. "SEMI is pleased to appoint Art Zafiropoulo to the distinguished position of emeritus board member in light of his extraordinary contribution to the semiconductor equipment and materials industry and its global membership association," said Stanley T. Myers, president and CEO of SEMI. Zafiropoulo founded Drytek, a startup dry-etch company that was acquired by General Signal in 1986. He served as president of the General Signal Semiconductor Equipment Group's international operations and became president of its Ultratech Stepper business unit in 1990. Zafiropoulo led management buyout of the unit, now called Ultratech, which is based in San Jose, Calif., and supplies lithography and laser-processing systems used to manufacture semiconductors and nanotechnology devices. He has been inducted into the Semiconductor Industry Hall of Fame.

Glossary
lithography
Lithography is a key process used in microfabrication and semiconductor manufacturing to create intricate patterns on the surface of substrates, typically silicon wafers. It involves the transfer of a desired pattern onto a photosensitive material called a resist, which is coated onto the substrate. The resist is then selectively exposed to light or other radiation using a mask or reticle that contains the pattern of interest. The lithography process can be broadly categorized into several...
nanotechnology
The use of atoms, molecules and molecular-scale structures to enhance existing technology and develop new materials and devices. The goal of this technology is to manipulate atomic and molecular particles to create devices that are thousands of times smaller and faster than those of the current microtechnologies.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
